š± Montgomery County Sues Major Social Media Companies Over Youth Mental Health
Montgomery County has filed a federal lawsuit against Meta, Snap, TikTok and Google, alleging their social media platforms are contributing to mental health problems among children and teenagers.
According to the County, the lawsuit seeks to hold the companies accountable for what officials describe as the negative effects of social media use on young people, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, sleep disorders, self-harm and suicidal ideation.
County officials pointed to the 2025 Pennsylvania Youth Survey, which states that three or more hours of social media use approximately doubles the risk of depression and anxiety symptoms among youth.
Montgomery County says it is the largest jurisdiction in Pennsylvania pursuing litigation against social media companies. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in California as a joint effort between the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners and District Attorney's Office.
